Smile Analysis & Initial Examination

Your Smile Analysis is one of the most important steps in determining what is best for your smile. Dr. Armstrong and Julie Martin, RDH personally handle your initial consultation. They will listen to your ideas on what you would like to see for results and give you sincere feedback as to what options are available to you when considering to enhance your smile. At your initial assessment we will first perform an oral health screening examination which most always includes:

  • Medical & Dental history
  • Head & Neck tissue
  • TMJ & Muscles
  • Intraoral tissues
  • Teeth & Bite conditions
  • Periodontal status
  • Impressions for diagnostic models
  • Digital Photographic series
  • Radiographs for diagnostics

During your initial interview we will discuss & review:

  • What are your goals of care
  • How would you like your care handled
  • Medical history and current condition
  • Dental history and problems
  • What information and diagnostic data may be necessary
  • Any oral habits and diet effects
  • Appliance condition and fit

Smile Analysis:

From our digital photographs/movies and input from you (such as old photos or sample smile images) we can discuss what are problems and possible treatment solutions. Our Smile analysis includes:

  • Facial Symmetry & Proportion
  • Lip shape, contours and movement
  • Tooth exposure and position
  • Tooth shapes and Shades
  • Gum shape and exposure
  • Tooth wear and dentin exposure

Comprehensive analysis and prioritized treatment better assure a successful case. Disease and bite problems, if not corrected will lead to failure of any of the esthetic treatment you may receive. You may be referred to your dentist of record if necessary to handle these problems. Or, in many cases, you may need treatment with other professionals that we routinely work with to help us facilitate your case. These may be an oral surgeon, orthodontist, periodontist, plastic surgeon or cosmetologist.

After review of other findings, we will be able to present treatment solutions. Sometimes we use a clinical composite resin overlay, laboratory was design, or a software manipulation smile design to give us a prototype to help us design smile improvements together – before any treatment is begun.
